History and Development of Money in Kenya

‘As the Bank marks 50 years of existence, it is my pleasure to present this book to every reader hoping that a reminiscence of the past and a lesson for the future will be found in the pages of this book.’
– Dr. Patrick Njoroge,
Governor, Central Bank of Kenya (2016)

The Central Bank of Kenya celebrated 50 years of service to the nation of Kenya on 14th September, 2016. To commemorate these years of existence, the Bank published this book; co-authored by Prof. Terry Ryan and Evans Muttai. History and Development of Money in Kenya highlights the growth of currency over the years from the use of portable and divisible trade goods, to cowrie shells and now the shilling.

The book is also incisive in how transportation networks and boarder changes influenced the use of currencies in the East African Region.
